” The interior surfaces of all Tampere Tram’s open trial carriages have been treated with Nanoksi’s self-disinfecting nanocoating before they are put into passenger traffic.

All tramcars that will come to Tampere later will be coated before they are put into passenger traffic. The last carriage will arrive in Tampere after mid-August.

The nanocoating was developed by Plasmonics Oy, a company co-founded by Dr. Pasi Keinänen, professor Mika Valden, and researcher Bela Bhuskute.

The coating developed by Plasmonics destroys microbes, viruses, bacteria, mold spores, and other volatile organic compounds from all surfaces exposed to even a little light.

In May 2020, Plasmonics has a laboratory and production facility in Hervanta in the former VTT premises.

Ali Huttunen, Head of Rolling Stock at Tampere Tramway Ltd tells that coating one tram only takes about 20 minutes for one installer.

– Our carriages have always been coated by the same person, so the work goes quickly as he is well trained in his task, says Huttunen.

The carriages must be treated with a coating again after about a year.

- It is done at our depot at night when all carriages have maintenance time, Ali Huttunen tells.

Nanoksi has covered exhibitions of well-known public places in Tampere and the surrounding area, such as Särkänniemi amusement park, Tampere hall, Ideapark Shopping Mall, Main Library Metso, Pikkupalatsi (the Little Palace), exhibitions of Vapriikki and Werstas, Tampere Comedy Theater and Tampere Theater. “
